people buying used pcs for salvage copies of windows xp

http://gizmodo.com/5100456/people-buying-used-pcs-for-salvage-copies-of-windows-xp

This article is about large cooperation's in which are buying older computers to get Windows XP instead of Windows Vista. Evidently it is a lot cheaper for companies to buy old computers instead of buying new computers and downgrade them from Windows Vista. I thought this was pretty interesting because I have Windows Vista. I can see why they would try to downgrade because Windows Vista has a lot of problems they claim to be features, I think they are rather annoying. Also the article talks about how sellers on eBay and craigslist are slapping on the Windows XP sticker and selling you a different operating system. If your looking to buy a computer strictly for XP buy it from companies such as Dell, HP, etc.

You guys have Vista? what do you think?

No matter how you feel about Vista, I don't understand how anyone could think Windows XP is any better. As far as I can tell, XP doesn't have anything that Vista doesn't have. I understand if someone prefers an entirely different operating system, but I think most of those who are downgrading to XP just have issues with change and take comfort in jumping on the "Vista sucks" bandwagon. Windows Vista is far from perfect, but in my opinion it's a clear upgrade from XP.

I have little experience with Vista - I've just been using my Mac the past few months. But I have used older versions of Windows my whole life. I know what it is like to change to a new format; your productivity and quickness decline because you no longer know where everything is with the interface.

And I can understand why people do not like Vista. From what Ryan is saying, it sounds like Vista has lots of problems. If you like XP more than Vista, then people, don't use Vista!

Even if Vista is, like you are saying Matt, better than XP, I still see pros to purchasing an old computer running on XP. You can save money, and revert to a system with which you are familiar. But I sure wouldn't do that unless I got an amazing deal because I have had to deal with so many slow, problematic computers, most of which were used primarily by children and young teenagers for a few years.

I agree that saving money is a perfectly valid incentive to buy a Windows XP system, but I think this article shows that there can be risks in doing that, and that there are more important things to consider when purchasing a computer than the XP-vs-Vista issue. I also agree that if someone genuinely dislikes Vista for whatever reason, then they have the right to downgrade. Hopefully I'm not coming across as a fanboy, because I'm certainly not. It just bugs me when people avoid Vista because it's the cool thing to do. Again, there's nothing spectacular about it, but I don't think it's as dysfunctional as some people make it out to be...or maybe I'm just lucky that I haven't had a lot of problems with it.

The main problem with vista is memory management... vista is terrible at it. Vista always screws up how much RAM to allocate to specific programs when it is running. This means if you have a computer with only a gigabyte of RAM, your computer will run significantly worse on vista than it will on xp. Plus, you can find injected versions of windows xp on the internet with all the windows vista features like the sidebar and visual quirks plus free tools that are better than the ones included in vista.
